I, Saul, the latest book by prolific Christian author Jerry B. Jenkins is a historical fiction story about Saul of Tarsus (the Apostle Paul before his conversion on the Damascus Road) interwoven in a modern day suspense/intrigue plot.
The book begins quickly with a mysterious urgent phone call for Dr. Augie Knox, a professor at Arlington Theological Seminary. With just a short introductory chapter to set the stage for world travel and dangerous intrigue laced with a hint of romance, we are then swept back in time to first-century Rome where we meet Luke and Paul. Luke is a doctor tending to those dying while Rome burns and Paul is imprisoned and sentenced to death for his outspoken faith.
Without revealing too much of the plot since this is a suspenseful story, I will say that it was a page-turner for me even though it’s not the type of novel I generally read. The historical details and characterizations of Paul, Luke, and other Biblical people were fascinating. I felt as though I was there with them.
Dr. Augie Knox is a very likable character, easy to root for throughout the novel. The contrast between the locations today and in ancient times provided an interesting setting. Now that I’ve finished the book, I’m handing it over to my husband because I think he will really enjoy it. I don’t read many novels that appeal to men equally as well as women, but this is one.
I, Saul is available in hardcover, paperback, and Kindle editions. There will be a sequel coming soon entitled I, Paul. I can’t wait to read it!
