The Science of Snow {Poppins Book Nook}

The Poppins Book Nook continues to be a fun part of our homeschooling month around here.  It was featured a lot in some of my favorite posts from 2014, too.  This month we’re excited to share the theme “To the Laboratory!”

The Science of Snow

What happens when the whole outdoors becomes your science laboratory? You get to study something “cool” like the science of snow! This was definitely a delight-directed learning adventure for us.

The Science of Snow: Fun Winter Learning

Snow Under the Microscope

Snowflakes are an awesome testimony to God’s beautiful design. A man from Vermont, nicknamed Snowflake Bentley (1865-1931), spent a lifetime studying snowflakes.  With limited photographic and microscopic technology, he was able to capture these hexagonal designs on film. He painstakingly photographed them without destroying them before they melted.

No Two Snowflakes are Alike!

We took the time to catch snowflakes and look at them on our gloves before they melted, though we weren’t able to get them under the microscope.  Just seeing all the different designs was amazing and it provided another opportunity to talk about God’s unique and purposeful design in creation. If He cares so much about the design of snowflakes, how much more does He care for us?

Be sure to check out the free winter printables I created to go along with our study!

We read the following books to learn more {click on them for details}:

You need to head over to Enchanted Homeschooling Mom and download the free lapbook components she offers each month to go along with the themes.  These are great activities for kids of all ages to record what they’ve read and learned!  It includes the following:

  • An official interactive Poppins Book Nook bookmark for the monthly theme
  • This month’s Passport pages to add to your lapbook
  • Several lapbook elements centered around To the Laboratory!
  • Reading response writing prompt

My girls look forward to completing these pages every month and adding to their Poppins Book Nook reading notebook.

Stop by and see what all the other Poppins Book Nook members did this month:
