It seems that life is in fast forward speed right now as we zoom toward the holidays and a new year. I’d like to begin featuring more of our homeschool highlights here on the blog after everything settles down. I’ve been so busy with my Christmas series!
For now, I’ll mention what’s working for us in science: Christian Kids Explore Biology from Bright Ideas Press. It’s geared for 1st through 6th grade and I’ve found the lessons are flexible enough to work for both of my younger daughters (6 & 8). I love things they can do together! Biology covers everything from plants to animals to insects to humans. It’s a great introduction to general science and biology and has been an incentive for me to do more hands-on science learning with my girls.
For instance, we collected pine cones and did leaf rubbings as part of the unit on plants. It’s something we might have done anyway, but it was a plus to work it into our science lesson to expand on the learning. They are learning new science vocabulary words, too, like conifer and deciduous. We’ll be making pine cone and peanut butter bird feeders soon, which is part of the activities as well. The girls are having a good time and soaking up the lessons.
