When I first began homeschooling over 10 years ago, high school seemed a long way off. Now here I am with a 16-year-old sophomore who is set to graduate a year early. She is dedicated, hard-working, and I couldn’t be more proud of her.
Homeschooling has given us the opportunity to encourage her in ways that we couldn’t if she had to follow the standard public school path. Namely, we’ve been able to encourage her entrepreneurial spirit and tailor her education specifically to the skills she needs for her future career plans.
You can read more about it in her own words in this post: Why I’m Proud to be a Homeschooler
I had the opportunity to write a guest post in the Homeschooling High School series at Year Round Homeschooling. I talk about our own experience and offer encouragement and suggestions for those who want to take a delight-directed, entrepreneurial approach to homeschooling the high school years. It can be done!
Here is an excerpt from that post:
Homeschooling and Entrepreneurship is a Natural Fit
Since homeschoolers tend to be out-of-the-box thinkers in the first place, it only makes sense that they’re also more likely to become entrepreneurs. Whether it’s an in-between job for the summer selling their own t-shirt designs on Zazzle or Amazon Merch, or a full-blown career as a writer/blogger or web designer, homeschoolers shouldn’t be afraid to break the mold with entrepreneurship. It’s a huge blessing to be your own boss and manage your own business at a young age. It’s good experience whether they continue down the entrepreneur path, go on to college, or get a job working for someone else eventually. Building that skill set of responsibility, creativity, and business acumen is invaluable in any future endeavor.
Homeschooling Future Entrepreneurs
I hope you’ll take a minute and head over to read the entire post. Feel free to leave a comment or send an email to let me know what you think, questions you may have, or share how this has worked in your own homeschool.
